Endorphins, The Happy Hormones: Their Functions and Importance in the Body.

Wanna know about the mood controller of your body? How do the body chemicals like endorphins play a role in your happiness or cause depression? This article covers the secretion and function of endorphins along with tips to increase endorphin levels and things that will elevate its level when your body lacks it.

When it’s released?

Your body releases endorphins as substances (hormones) when it experiences pain or anxiety. They are however generated during fun things like sex, food, spas, and athletics. Endorphins assist in pain control, relieving stress, and general wellness.

Your pituitary gland and hypothalamus, which are both found within the brain, release endorphins. Your brain’s neurotransmitters, or communicators, comprise a chemical called endorphins. They send messages across your central nervous system by interacting with the opioid receptors in your brain’s reward centers.

How to Increase Endorphins.

Physical activities.

Endorphins have traditionally been believed to be responsible for the popular “runner’s high,” a condition of euphoria seen after participating in intense, extended physical exercise.

Yet, it wasn’t clear until 2008 when improved imaging devices enabled it possible to track endorphins in individuals.

Studies found players’ brains both prior to and after a workout, using positron emission tomography (PET) images. They noticed that after exercise, endorphin release was boosted.

Some specialists prescribe regular gym work as a therapy for mild – to – moderate anxiety because activity boosts mood and generates endorphins.

Eat dark chocolate.

Taking dark chocolate may increase endorphin levels, according to research.   Flavonoids, as they are present in cocoa powder and chocolate, are believed to be healthy for the brain.

Enjoying chocolate may greatly boost endorphins, according to a 2017 review. But, many conventional chocolate items contain little to no pure cocoa and may include a significant amount of sugar and fats.

Because of its high calorie and fatty acid composition, chocolate must only be used in moderation by those looking to use it to enhance endorphin levels and mood. Foods that contain a minimum of 70% cocoa are ideal.

Spices.

Hot food lovers may realize that their favorite dishes sometimes bring them an extra spark.

Based on some research, the spicy chemicals in hot peppers and similar foods may cause a tongue pain sensation that triggers an increase in endorphins.

A list of other things that you may experience to have increased endorphins is:

  • Gardening.
  • Dancing.
  • Have time with the art you love.
  • Spend time watching your fav TV program.
  • Laughing with your loved ones and having quality time is another way to go.

Symptoms of Decreased Endorphins.

Severe migraines.

An unusual level of endorphins could be a major contributor to ongoing headaches. According to numerous studies, patients who suffer from migraines also exhibit the same endorphin deficiency that contributes to despair.

Fibromyalgia.

Endorphin levels in fibromyalgia patients could be lower than normal. Based on one study, individuals who suffered from fibromyalgia had lower endorphin levels than those who had not. Endorphin levels were measured including during and after workouts.

Improvements in levels of the hormone were associated with pain relief in people with fibromyalgia, according to another study conducted.

Exercise, human engagement, and stress-relieving activities such as yoga may be recommended to people suffering from fibromyalgia in order to boost their endorphin levels. To relieve their symptoms, they may also be given prescription medications.

Other side-effects may include:

  • Disturbed sleeping schedule.
  • Depression.
  • Dull boring routine.
  • Sadness.

All the physical activities mentioned above can improve the levels of endorphines in your body that will lead to the enhanced mood and decrease anxiety.
